By The Book much the best in Dubai Racing Club Classic

Lightly raced four-year-old By The Book earned himself a rise in class as he sauntered to victory in the Dubai Racing Club Classic at Meydan, UAE, on Friday, 19 December.

The Charlie Appleby-trained son of Frankel had been restricted to three previous career starts, winning decisively on his first two outings prior to finishing third in a Newmarket Listed race.

Book Review bounded off into an uncontested lead in the 12-furlong turf handicap, with By The Book tacking over from his outside draw to settle in fifth, one off the rail.

Having moved up a place entering the final three furlongs, By The Book cruised into contention a furlong and a half out before sweeping into the lead soon after, with William Buick coasting home to score by a little over four lengths.

Charlie Appleby said: “By The Book is a progressive horse we have always liked. Physically, he has done well and has a bit of stamp to him. The style of racing on this track suits him and we will see how far he can progress through the winter.

“William said going out that he was not sure afterwards whether he would be telling me to drop back to 10 furlongs or stay at this trip. By The Book is a strong traveller and, once William angled him out, it was pretty straightforward.

“At Newmarket he got lost in the dip, although he was entitled to come forward for that. It has been a pleasing night, so onwards and upwards.”

William Buick said: “By The Book could not have done that any easier. I was delighted with him. He is a horse full of promise and this track was going to suit him. He put in a performance that would have you hoping that he could make the next grade.

“He definitely stays this trip, no question, but he does have a turn of foot. From my point of view, I would not rule out mile-and-a-quarter races for him. He is a very promising horse, even at his age now, as he has only run a handful of times. Hopefully, we will see plenty more of him.”
