Devon Island shows stamina with G3 UAE 2,000 Guineas second
Improving colt Devon Island put up a strong performance on his G3 debut as he closed well to take second in the UAE 2,000 Guineas at Meydan on Friday, 23 January.
Chasing a third straight win over the course and distance, the Charlie Appleby-trained son of Practical Joke showed good early speed as a host of horses battled for the early lead in the mile Classic.
Having found himself a close sixth towards the outside of the field, Devon Island rallied in the straight for William Buick, grabbing second from Union Security in the final strides to cross the line five lengths behind decisive winner Six Speed.
Charlie Appleby said: “It was a pleasing effort from Devon Island and all the evidence suggests that stepping up in trip is going to suit. We felt beforehand that he might be a mile-and-a-quarter horse and he has gained plenty of valuable experience today. We will look towards the Listed Dubai Road to the Kentucky Derby Stakes next month.”
