Distant Storm put a frustrating Acomb Stakes performance firmly behind him with a commanding victory in the G3 Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket, UK, on Thursday, 25 September.

The Night Of Thunder colt beat subsequent G2 winner Constitution River on his debut for Charlie Appleby at the July Course but failed to settle when coming home third in the G3 contest at York’s Ebor Festival.

Stablemate Catullus disputed the running alongside Commander’s Intent, with William Buick settling Distant Storm at the rear of the seven-strong field.

Distant Storm travelled into contention approaching the final furlong and quickened smartly, taking up the running soon after before powering clear to score by nearly five lengths.

Commander’s Intent, a son of Victor Ludorum, rallied to finish second, with the John & Thady Gosden-trained Archer Royal staying on to grab third from Catullus in the closing stages.

Charlie Appleby said: “I take responsibility for Distant Storm getting beat in the Acomb Stakes. William felt that there might not be pace on at York, so he was keen to get a forward pitch, but I remember we worked Distant Storm on the front once before and he was keen. Normally, he is a very relaxed horse. The Acomb was what it was – he jumped, was too keen and did everything the wrong way around.

“Today I told William to drop him in – and I think we have seen a nice horse in the making. William was impressed and said he got the same feel off him as he did in his novice. It was a straightforward assignment in the end.

“The question now is whether we go for the Dewhurst, which is just over two weeks away. If he comes out of this well enough, and I see no reason why he shouldn’t, and the ground conditions are sound, I would be happy to.

“Distant Storm is certainly up there in terms of our juvenile colts. Generally, if they are good enough to win at Group level in the autumn of their two-year-old career, you like to think that they will be at the forefront for the Guineas.”
