Observer & Tentyris headline another sensational Saturday
Godolphin’s exceptional Classic crop in Australia provided another banner Saturday at Flemington as Observer and Tentyris graduated to G1 honours, with Notable Speech scoring at the Breeders’ Cup on a brilliant day for the royal blue silks.
Observer became a first Godolphin winner of the G1 VRC Derby, and a notable first top-level success for his sire Ghaiyyath, as he made all in the extended 12-furlong showpiece to post a dominant win.
Winner of the G2 Drummond Golf Vase just seven days earlier, Observer met with a troubled run when finishing third in the G1 Caulfield Guineas in October. The Ciaron Maher-trained colt could drop back to a mile for the G1 Australian Guineas back at Flemington in February.
Tentyris produced a blistering display in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, with the Street Boss colt charging home from the rear to win easily in a race record time. Royal Ascot is a realistic long-term target for the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained sprinter, who is on course to make a quick return to action in this weekend’s G1 Champion Sprint.
Notable Speech avenged his defeat in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile 12 months ago as he stormed to victory in the Del Mar highlight. The Dubawi colt was continuing a remarkable run for his sire, trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick, who have now combined to win four of the last five editions of the contest.
Elsewhere at the Breeders’ Cup, Rebel’s Romance put up a brave effort as he narrowly failed in his quest to win a third G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf, with Ethical Diamond outkicking the Godolphin superstar close home. El Cordobes ran well to finish third in the same race.
Diamond Rain finished third in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and she looks set to remain in training next year alongside Notable Speech, Rebel’s Romance and El Cordobes. Cinderella’s Dream, who was eighth behind Diamond Rain, will retire to become a broodmare following her superb career.
Birr Castle notched a fourth Listed win in France on Saturday in the Grand Prix de Nantes, while two-year-old filly Pyromancer maintained a perfect start to her career in Japan on Sunday as she followed up a Kyoto debut success with a Stakes victory at the same course.
