Golden Mile retires from racing and becomes a Flagbearer for the Godolphin Lifetime Care program
Godolphin today confirms the retirement of Golden Mile, the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner who retires fit and well and will now take on the role of Flagbearer for the Godolphin Lifetime Care program as he begins a structured and fully supported transition into his post-racing career.
Golden Mile now enters the next chapter under the guidance of his long-time strapper and custodian, Lizzy Grima, who has played a central role in his day-to-day care throughout his racing career.
He retires as a G1 Caulfield Guineas winner with a record that reflects his consistency across five seasons. From his maiden win as a two-year-old at Ballarat to Group victories in the Caulfield Guineas, Callander-Presnell, Ming Dynasty and Theo Marks Stakes, he also recorded placings in major races including the Golden Eagle, Epsom Handicap and Kingsford Smith Cup.
Away from race day, Golden Mile carried that same calm, approachable presence. During a visit from families at a local school, he naturally became the centre of attention, patient, relaxed and completely at ease.
For Lizzy Grima, being appointed as his custodian through the Godolphin Lifetime Care program is a moment she will always treasure. Lizzy said:
“When I got the phone call, I was in tears. I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long. I’ve been with him since he was two and have been by his side almost every step of the way. Being his strapper has always meant the world to me.
“With my birthday was on Monday, this honestly feels like the perfect present. He means so much to me, and I’m grateful to the Godolphin team for letting me take him on.
“In the stable, he’d rest his head on my shoulder and just melt into the hugs, that was him. He’s always had the kindest nature.”
Golden Mile will now enter a well-managed transition phase, beginning with early education in equestrian disciplines and exposure at smaller shows. His long-term pathway includes an ambition to compete at Equimillion, with the potential to progress to the Sydney Royal Easter Show as his training develops.
Head of Bloodstock, Jason Walsh, said Golden Mile represents the purpose and visibility of the Godolphin Lifetime Care program.
“Golden Mile is a wonderful example of what our program represents. Flagbearers like him help promote the versatility of the thoroughbred beyond racing. When people see horses like him succeed in new disciplines, it lifts the perception and opportunity for all thoroughbreds post-racing.”
“Our responsibility doesn’t end at the racetrack, it begins again in a different way. We’re proud to support his transition and thrilled to see him continue under the care of someone who knows him so well.”
Golden Mile retires with 5 wins, 2 seconds, 5 thirds and over AU$4.5 million in earnings from 28 starts. We now look forward to following his progress in the years ahead and wish Lizzy every success as they begin this new chapter together.
